Coping Skills: Part One

Hello my Zebras and Spoonies! Thank you for coming and hanging out with me today. I am glad that you are here.

Today I want to revisit the topic of how I cope with my chronic illness. I made a previous post about this that focused on the philosophy that I use when thinking about my chronic illness that allows me to better manage the challenges I face. You can read that here:

The Obesity Discussion

Hello my zebras and spoonies, thank you for coming and hanging out with me today. I am glad that you are here.

Today I’m going to be talking about obesity, because this is a complicated and touchy topic. For those of you who don’t know, I’m going to start by talking about a little bit of my own personal history in that I used to be morbidly obese. I have been struggling a lot with my weight and have historically had some good success. I have lost enough weight that while I am still obese, I am no longer in the category of being morbidly obese and this is a huge win for me. But the fight is constant and every day and really difficult. And I don’t need to tell anybody who has tried to lose weight how amazingly difficult of a task that is.

Sodium

Sodium helps maintain normal blood pressure, supports the work of your nerves and muscles, and regulates your body’s fluid balance. A normal blood sodium level is between 135 and 145 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L). Hypernatremia (high blood sodium levels) is when your blood level is above 145. Hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels) is when your blood level is below 135. Diagnosing either hypernatremia or hyponatremia is done with lab work. Urine testing can also be done, but is generally not considered necessary.

Update 112321

Hello my zebras and spoonies! thank you for coming and hanging out with me. I’m glad that you’re here.

Today I’m just going to give an update of life, the universe and everything that is me. Some backstory is that I have endometriosis and with that I’ve had a lot of pain, which has been progressively getting worse over the last five to six years. I have a Mirena IUD that I’ve been using to control the bleeding and pain. It’s not really doing the job that I need it to do anymore. It has been controlling the bleeding, but not the pain.

Electrolyte Series: Introduction

Hell my zebras and spoonies! Thank you for hanging out with me today and I’m glad that you’re here.

When you have chronic illness, it isn’t uncommon to have problems with electrolyte imbalances. Because of that, I’ve decided to do a series that talks about what they are, how the body uses them and things that we can do to manage our electrolytes. For the next seven weeks, I will make a post on Wednesday about one of the electrolytes.

The Myth of Binary Gender

Hello, my zebras and spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today. I’m glad you were here. Today, I’m going to be talking about the myth of binary gender.

Let’s first start by talking about the fact that biological sex is not the same as gender. What causes some confusion in the general public is the use of biological sex and gender as interchangeable terms when they’re really not. They don’t refer to the same thing. Biological sex is usually determined by your karyotype or your genetics. There are other factors that come into play and we’ll talk about that later. Gender is mostly used for cultural behaviors such as what is considered appropriate for dress, what is considered appropriate manners, signs of deference etc. that differentiate between the two sexes.

Consent for the Pelvic Examination

Hello my zebras and spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today. I’m glad that you’re here.

But today, I’m gonna be talking about something that is potentially a trigger for people. I’m going to be talking about trauma stuff and we’re going to be talking about rape. So if these are things that are sensitive to you, you might want to go hang out somewhere else for a while. But otherwise, let’s get into it.

I am not the person you see
as I am living here behind my mask.
You have taught me
that be who I am isn’t safe.
You taught me this with your words,
with the way you’ve shunned me.
You taught me this when you laughed
and made fun of me for being different.
The teacher lied to me,
when she said that words could never hurt me.
Sticks and stones break my bones
and the words cut something deeper.
When you told me, I wasn’t good enough, I believed you.
When you told me, I was lazy, I believed you.
These words you gave me,
became part of who I am.
What is said, is done.
You can never take them back.
And now I live here, behind my mask.

Update 110821

Hello my zebras and spoonies! Thanks for coming and visiting with me today.

So, last week was a long one. Sunday was Halloween, you know on the 31st and I had a fantastic holiday. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year and I was low on spoons and I decided to push it anyway and I did the whole thing. Got into costume and make up and passed out candy for several hours. Then we did a dinner and some scary movies after passing out candy. That came at a price; because that’s the thing about having a chronic illness. You don’t get to just do the thing. You usually do the thing and then you get to spend some undetermined amount of time paying the price for doing the thing. For me, it’s been most of a week, and I’m still kind of gimping on into recovery but at least I’m mostly functional at this point. By overextending myself, managed to send myself into a mast cell flare. On the upside it didn’t lead to any kind of anaphylactic reaction. Just kind of all around: “symptoms that suck.” So at least there’s that.
