The Catch 22 of Chronic Illness

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I just wanted to talk about the catch 22 of chronic illness. What’s the catch 22? How difficult it can be to judge how much or which activities are going to be alright and which ones are going to cause problems. One thing that almost every provider and most spoonies talk about is how important it is to manage and prevent your symptoms. What isn’t talked about enough is that this isn’t a simple equation that’s all worked out for us that will determine how to behave in order to achieve the best outcomes.

Confidence

How would you rate your confidence level?

WordPress Prompt

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about my self confidence, because it doesn’t work the way that most people think that it does. I’m great at bravado. I can jump into action and make it seem like I am really confident in what I am doing when I am feeling something altogether different inside. This has made it rather difficult to talk about some of the insecurities that I feel because most people who have met me don’t believe that I have them.

Joining a Support Group

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about joining a support group and why I think that you should. The internet is a large place with a vast number of people visiting it every day. There are groups on every social media platform that offer us ways to connect with others that are struggling in the same fashion that we are.

Norris Lab

Norris Lab

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I wanted to shed a little light on the research being done at the Norris Lab. This lab has “identified a strong candidate for hEDS and generated a genetically accurate mouse model to study the disease.” This means that they are working hard to find the genetic markers associated with the hypermobile type of Elhers Danlos Syndrome.

Patient-Provider Relationship

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to express some of the thoughts that I have on the patient-provider relationship. I think there is much to be said about the importance of the provider patient relationship. Trust is what good care is built upon. I know that I cannot care for patients that do not trust me. Nothing good can come from any relationship that lacks trust. And right now, healthcare providers are loosing trust.

Comfort Foods

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about comfort foods. We’ve all got them. Those things that we like to eat and drink because they help us emotionally feel better. They are foods that we associate with the goods times in life. For those of us with chronic illness, they are also foods that are safe for us to eat. Ones that won’t lead to us having a flare or trigger sensory issues.

Game Review: Destroy All Humans

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I am reviewing the game Destroy All Humans (the remake released in 2020). I don’t recall ever having played the original game, so I will not be making any comparison nor offering any commentary on how they did in context of this being a remake of a previous game.

Visual Style

The game does a great job staying with the 1950’s theme. Everything visually presented in the game has the feeling of belonging to the 1950’s, including the character and location art. Even the colors chosen felt appropriate to the theme. The art style felt like watching an upgraded 1950’s cartoon. It looks rather like a cartoon and embraces this style. It isn’t trying to be realistic and that’s part of the game’s comic appeal. The whole thing is intentionally goofy and it would be odd if it was presented in hyper realistic graphics.

Music and Sound Effects

The music and sound effects didn’t particularly stand out to me. I was able to play this game muted without really missing the sound. That being said, there are sound effects in the game that I rather enjoyed and could listen to all day. The sounds made when electrocuting people and cows were hilarious.

The dialogue in this game was pure gold. There where numerous lines of thought that were wonderfully voice acted in a B rated movie fashion that added a wonderful layer of humor to the game. The interactions between the two aliens was stereotypical archetypes of an intellectual and a brute. Neither particularly presenting as that alien.

Story Elements

There is nothing particularly surprising or revolutionary about the story of this game. The plot consists of humans accidently shooting down an alien craft at area 51 and then that alien race taking retaliatory action. It even includes the long standing trope regarding there being alien DNA in humans.

World or Setting

The game is set on Earth in the 1950’s in America. The game does a good job in capturing the essence of the era.

Characters

You play through the game as Crypto 137 who is a clone of the alien that was shot down. He is a stereotypical brute that is always ready to blow things up and smash things down. Orthopox is the intellectual who is presented as being his superior. He is the stereotypical leader who thinks he knows more then he actually does. They serve as interesting commentary on human interactions. Neither are particularly unique nor are they intended to be.

Level of Challenge

This game is hard. Just getting through each mission can be a challenge. But they add to each one additional objectives to make the missions more difficult.

User Interface

This game is much easier when played with a controller rather then using the key board and mouse. It allows the option of either though. It also allows the option to remap your controls.

Novelty or Unique Qualities

This game offers nothing more then the option to rampage through the world as a destructive angry alien. There is something rather satisfying about playing a game that centers itself on blowing things up. What makes it stand out as a murder spree is the manner in which it completely embraces the dark and goofy humor of that rampaging alien.

Emotional Impact

Don’t expect this game to offer you anything particularly emotionally moving. However, it is great for a good laugh if you need something to lift up your spirits.

Replay Value

There is a ton of replay value in this game. Every mission has optional objectives to complete. There are robots to hunt down and collect. There are 4 challenges in each mission to achieve 3 stars in. There is the unending pleasure of blowing things up.

Do I Recommend It?

This is a great game if you are looking for something that is fun and fast paced with a high level of challenge to it. Plenty of explosions, B rated acting and goofy humor. It is a strange mixture of things that comes together well to create a delightful romp.

Well, that’s about it for my rambling today. Thanks for coming and spending some time with me. If you like what you read, click on that like button. It really does help! Until we talk again, you take care of yourselves!

I Struggle with Ableism

A reading of the blog.

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about ableism and how I personally struggle with the ablest thoughts and beliefs that I was raised with. When we think about someone having discriminatory thoughts and behaviors against a group of people, we generally assume that it is a person that is outside that group. But the truth is that part of the discrimination within our society is within the people that are being discriminated against.

Simplifying Life

Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about how I went about simplifying my life. By this, I mean how I reduced the amount of energy I needed to spend every day in order to accomplish everything that I need to. For those of us with chronic illness, we often find that there are more things that we are expected to do then we have energy for. This means that we need to take a close look at our lives and decide what we need to cut away and what needs to remain.
