What Would a Buddist Do?

Hello my Zebras and Spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I am going to be doing something a little bit different. I read the blog post: What would a Buddhist do? I found it interesting and this is my response to that post.

“Cease to do evil,
Learn to do good,
Control the mind.
This is the teaching of Buddha.”

This post had a lot of really good things to say and led to me thinking about quite a few things. I feel the strong urge to add some toughts to those already in this post. Please, read the post linked above. I will be assuming that you have read it and my comments are in dialouge with it. I will also be using the same headings to make it easier to follow what part of the post I am addressing. So, here goes my rambling and randomness.

Stigma

Hello my Zebras and Spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk about the stigma that many of face. Stigma is surrounding many chronic illnesses, but I feel that the stigma that surrounds those with mental illness is perhaps the most damaging. The first reason that I feel this way is because we inherently connect our mental state to our ego and when people judge our mental illness it is impossible to not feel it as a personal attack. These kinds of comments and actions just tend to hit us in our most sensitive areas. But there is also the very real fact that we need to have of mental health in order to be able to manage our physical health. When we have poorly regulated mental illness, we will not be able to manage our physical illnesses. This means that the stigmas that prevent people from getting good mental health care is going to effect every aspect of their wellness.

Getting Control

Hello my Zebras and Spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. So, you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic illness. Now what? There are things that you can do to help find balance in your life (regardless of the diagnosis or even if you don’t have one).

While this list is going to be simple, it is important to remember that they are things that are hard to implement. Life style changes are hard and take time to master. You are more likely to be successful if you work on one area of your life at a time. Shoring up even one area will increase your well being, even if there are other areas that still need work. Remember to be patient with your self and to keep in mind that change takes time.

Giving Emotional Space

Hello my Zebras and Spoonies! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I am going to be talking about relationships again. Because they are important. We need them to be healthy people.

Relationships are dialogue and action. We seem to be more aware of the action part then we are of the dialogue part. Of course not keeping promises is a problem as is failing to keep our end of a bargain. But the words we choose and how we say things to each other matters just as much. Often, it is what we say to each other that kills intimacy rather then what we are doing.
