Hello Dazzle! Thanks for coming and hanging out with me today, I’m glad that you are here. Today I want to talk to you about death. I am aware that this is a difficult topic for many, but it is because of those emotional difficulties that I think we should be talking about death and dying more. Because death changes everything. Our own deaths only impact us in their anticipation. The deaths of strangers, loved ones and acquaintances will likely be events that all of us have to deal with at some point in our lives. Living when these people have died will change us.

Today I’m going to be talking about the idea that mental illness is an invisible illness. This is something that I both agree and don’t agree with. And here is a trigger warning: I will be talking about suicide in this post. So if that is a topic that you have a difficult time with then you should probably pass on this one.
I get the idea that you can’t look at someone and know that they have mental illness. The same way that you can’t look at someone and know that they have high blood pressure. In this way, mental illnesses are invisible.

A year ago, a dear friend of mine lost his long battle with depression and died by suicide.
I always imagined that someone I loved committing suicide would make me angry. But of all the complex feelings that I have had, anger has never been amongst them. While I mourn and suffer because of his choice to end his life, I also understand why he chose to do so. His death is a testimony of our failure as a society. He spent most of his life dedicated to helping others with mental illness because he understood how deep those struggles effect you. Despite all his training and years of experience as a psychiatric nurse, he was not immune any more than anyone else.
